The Trough is a special place on the South Branch. It is a six mile stretch of river that is wedged between two, almost vertical, mountains. Once in the trough, there is no excape until you exit at Harmisson's Landing. The water is brimming with smallmouth in it's long pools, swift rapids and tempting back eddies. Eagle sightings are a sure happening in the trough. A day's float will be rewarded by up to one hundred smallies. Wading is preferred by this fly fisher and his pal, David. Topwater is the way to go when fishing the trough. Poppers,Mud Hoppers and the White Wulff are flies of choice. Better use an 8 weight here because the fish are big and the river is wide. If you have never visited the trough, your life isn't complete.
